Some readers believe that the elaborate decoration that Hester embroiders on the scarlet letter indicates her rejection of the community’s view of her act.  Do you agree or disagree?  Explain.

  1. I disagree with this statement. Hester shows that she knows what her punishment is and that she got a lucky break. She stays in town and accepts the ridicule that comes with her punishment. People treat her poorly and she expected it. Hester did not defy or try to lessen her punishment by crafting a elaborate letter, she merely embrases it.

  2. I disagree with that because she knows what she did was wrong and she knows the punishment. She decorates it because she's gonna have to wear it, so she might as well make it look nice. She doesn't reject the community's view of her act, she just doesn't want to be seen wearing something ugly.

  3. I see why they might think that because she seems to be somewhat flaunting the fact that she sinned, but I disagree with it. I disagree because, Hester knows that she has already committed the sin, what's done is done, and if she has to wear the letter for a long time, she might as well wear it with some style. I think it is just a natural thing for women to accesorize any article of clothing that they deem ugly, so that it fits them and looks good.

  4. I disagree because by decorating it he is showing that she accepts her punishment and knows its just a part of her life now. Plus because she had to stand on the stage for committing to the sin, everyone already knew she was a sinner and even without the letter being bright and elaborate i think she would still be tormented.

  5. I disagree that Hester was trying to reject the community's view of her act of adultery. Hester embroiders the letter that indicates her sin because she has to wear it stitched to her clothing forever, therefore she was going to make it flashy. It is a way for her to accept, and learn from her mistaken sin. In addition, the stunning letter causes new people of the town to question it, and she always explains what it stands for, therefore the style of the letter is not an act of rejection from Hester.

  6. I think the community's intention on making Hester wear the scarlet letter as a punishment was to make Hester realize the severity of her crime. However Hester does not act ashamed or embarrassed by her act of adultery, she wears her scarlet letter proudly on her chest. This doesnt mean she necessarily disagrees with the community's disapproval of her act, but she has accepted it and will have to deal with the child because of what she has done. The child almost seems to make up for her mistake because Pearl is now the only good thing in her life she has left.

  7. I disagree, I think that Hester accepts that she is going to be viewed differently than others. There is no way to hide it and it is for the rest of her life so why not make it some what presentable. It shows that she is creative, and that she has pride to wear the letter and not try to reject or hide it.

  8. No, I believe its a pride thing with Hester. She probably feels that what she did was wrong yes, but she owns up to it even more with a very embroidered letter.

  9. I completely disagree because Hester, knowing that she did do wrong, has to live with this letter on her forever. Since it is going to be a perment symbol of her already she just wanted to dress it up to look nice and own up to her wrongdoing. I believe she knows she got lucky with the punishment they gave her but is still getting ignored and treated poorly by everyone in the community anyways, which she expected from staying. I believe she accepted the punishment they gave her and is just living with it how she wants to.

  10. I disagree because Hester knows that she committed a sin. She has to wear this letter for the rest of her life so why not make it pretty? She got out of being killed so I think decorating the letter is also her way of celebrating her luck that she is still alive.

  11. Yes, I agree that the elaboration of the scarlet letter represents her rejection to the Puritan view of her sin. From reading the novel and by analyzing her actions, one can tell that she is different from the puritan community. She, makes herself an outcast and does not associate with the Puritans. If she did agree with the Puritan view of her sin, one she wouldn't put the letter so elaborate, two she wouldn't dress Pearl the way she does, three she would of made Pearl more part of the community in trying to 'help Pearl', and finally she would of given the name of her lover. She does realize what she did was wrong, but with all these aspects listed, it shows she has a different perspective of it than the Puritans do. She is naturally different from the society. In conclusion, the letter, and several other things reflect her difference of opinion towards her sin.

  12. Hester's scarlet letter is created solely for the purpose that the townspeople see it and respond to it. Hester knows what she's done; and while she is ashamed and sorry for what she's done, she will not shrink into the shadows just because the townspeople want to ridicule her. The embroidered scarlet letter awes people and many people don't know how to react it.

  13. Hester's elaborate decoration of the scarlet letter does not mean she rejects the community's view of her act. On the contrary, the painstaking time she administered to making the scarlet letter "A" to wear on her dreary garments shows she does not mean to hide away the shame. While Hester could have decided to make the letter minuscule and plain like her attire, she made it evident that she would wholeheartedly accept the punishment given to her. If Hester did not agree with her punishment, she could have rebelled and taken the opportunity to leave the community, as once offered to her. Hester continues to try and be an integral member of the Puritan society by contributing her valuable needlework skills to the townspeople, who look down upon her, and by also helping the less fortunate. Hester responds to the constant negative feedback from the community with utmost grace because she acknowledges, too, her sin and acts accordingly. Hester shows great reverence towards the punishment administered by the Puritan community, and carries on her ordeal as a pious Puritan with confidence.

  14. In some ways I agree because I believe Hester is an attention seeker. She understands her sin and is suffering due to the fact that every where she goes she has to carry her sin on her chest. I believe that in her case she is see's is as if she is going to where it, why not make it look good.

  15. I Disagree with what the community believes, her elaborately decorating the letter is just a way of showing her character. She is not trying to make it look like she got of easy instead she is imbracing herself.

  16. I disagree. I think Hester recognizes what she did was wrong and she is ashamed of it. The only reason she decorated the scarlet letter is probably because it's something she has to wear for the rest of her life, so she might as well make it pretty. I don't think she intended to be disrespectful.

  17. I disagree because Hester knows that what she has done is wrong and she knows that she has to live with that guilt for the rest of her life. Her reason for embelishing the scarlet letter was more of a pride thing for her, she wants to show that she has no shame. I don't think she had the intentions on being disrespectful to the community, I think she just genuinely wanted it to look good.

  18. I disagree because Hester knows that she has to live with the letter on her the rest of her life as a punishment of her sin. Shes not rejecting herself from the community on purpose, shes just making a statement even though she knows its the shame and disrespect of the Puritain Community

  19. I disagree because Hester already has to look at that letter on her chest every day for her punishment. I believe the reason she decorates it is to keep a little bit of pride in herself to keeep her going.

  20. I disagree. I don't think that the elaborate embroidery of the scarlet letter symbolizes her rejection for the community's view of her actions. If it did, then wouldn't she have left town or refused to wear the scarlet letter? Rather, I think that it symbolizes her pride, and because it is what will become her label, she makes it beautiful and makes it stand out as if she is making a mockery of her punishment and laughing in their faces. She still must be ashamed and embarrassed at times. But the scarlet letter shows that she is proud of who she is.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I disagree with this because the way Hester decorates the scarlet letter shows that she knows she did wrong and she is going to live with her actions. She takes pride in it without worrying about what any of the people in the town think or say about her.

  22. I disagree, wearing the letter in general is punishment enough and that Hester sticks around proves that she accepts that she has sinned. Elaborately decorating the letter helps her to embrace having to wear the letter and if i was in her position i would've done the same thing.

  23. I agree. I think she is showing that her sin, even though it is a sin, that it can yield beautifal things like life. The scarlet letter is a direct symbol of Pearl. As she decorates it nicely she could be describing how she is proud of the fact that she has a daughter of her own and the puritan society should learn to treat herself and Pearl more softly.

  24. I disagree, Hester realizes the seriousness of her punishment. She understands she was lucky and got this "second chance" instead of execution. Hester makes her letter elaborate because she doesnt want to walk around with an ugly marking for the rest of her life. The letter is shamefull no matter what color it may be!

  25. I disagree because she just embroidered the letter just as she would for any other task and it is her punishment to wear it. She had an affair although she was married and that is a sin in a puritan’s community. That’s why the community rejects her.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I do not agree because Hester seems to be just wanting to show off what she did weather it was right or wrong and she wanted to wear it to stick out more so that Reverend Dimmesdale would feel her pain. She wants to have no shame for what she did, she wants to show it off since she already has a beautiful daughter that keeps her happy and living.

  27. I dont think its a rejection, i think it's an acceptance. She just shows that shes knows what she did was wrong but thats not going to stop her from living her life, and the only way to move on is to embrace it and do the best she could do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I disagree I think when Hester embroidered the A it was her excepting what she has done. Also if she did reject the communities view of herself wouldn't she want to move away instead of staying and seeing all the disappointed and disgusted faces everyday?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I disagree. I think that Hester embroidering the A was symbolic of there being a beauty in everything, no mater how terrible something seems. The beauty found in the affair is the Hester got Pearl out of it which is why Pearl is always elaborately dressed as well.

  30. I do not agree. I believe that Hester wears the letter with pride to show that a good thing can come from something horrible. Most people think that Pearl is the living symbol of her sin not the A.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I disagree Hester is well aware of her sin. She knows that she commited adultery and does not decide to cover it, but make it known by making the "A" beautiful. She wears the "A" with pride even though it is a constant reminder of her sin. Although her situation is terrible, she makes it a little better by making the "A" colorful and embordered.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I disagree, I feel this Hester decorating the A is her accepting what she has done and trying to move on. Not only does she have the A to remind her of what she did she has Peral, her own guilt, Chillingworth as a reminder of her past, and the whole community and Dimmesdale remind her of commiting the sin so I think decorating the A should be no big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I disagree because i feel that Hester knows that what she did is wrong. She also knows that she got lucky because the normal punishment for adultery is death. If she is going to have to wear this letter, might as well make it worth wearing right?

  34. I think the elaborate embroiderie of the scarlet letter wasn't meant to be a complete rejection of the towns thoughts of Hester's sins. I think is was meant more as an: yes I have sinned, yes I must wear this, but I will not cower away and hide, because I did so. No she is not proud of what he did, but she has no choice but to wear it an she decodes to do so with her head held high. It's not her rejecting what the town thinks, It's her sort of embracing it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I kind of agree, but I wouldn't say she's rejecting their view. I think she's just having a different opinion about it that everyone else doesn't seem to consider. I think she embroidered the letter to show that she accepts what she did and has moved on from it. Every one can notice the and I think that was the point. She shows everyone that she made a mistake and she's not afraid to let people know. She's essentially learned from it and embroidering the letter as she did says all that. I think although the down she's her work as her being rebellious, she did it as a sense of "I know what I've done but as a mistake I'm embracing and have learned from it".

  36. In my opinion she did it because she wanted to prove to people that she can live with the A and not care what people say so she tries to show it off to the community so they know she is taking her punishment and still looks good.

  37. I think that public executions are a good idea because they show citizens that if you commit a crime then you have to pay the ulitmate price. I dont necesarily believe that it will effect everyone. Some people may always be criminals but it shows that we are serious about handling violence and crimes.

  38. I agree with the way she decorated her letter she is basically saying screw the commmunity i dont care what you guys think. I have commited my sin and I deal with it myself without your judgement.

  39. I disagree with the statement because she already has her daughter Pearl, which is another symbol of her sin following her around everywhere. She is reminded of her sin whenever she sees She can always just move to another city or town and take off the scarlet letter, but instead chooses to wear it with pride with her own style. If you have to wear something for the rest of your life, at least own it and make it yours.

  40. I think that she shows pride in the A and pride in Pearl. She isnt going to let people put her down and ridicule her for her sin. She accepts her sin and makes it beautiful to show people you cant use this against me. She makes it so elaborate to show herslef that it isnt that bad and there is something good in everything in my opinion.

  42. I disagree, because Hester stays in the community so it shows she has accepted her sin and will live the punishment. She could have easily left and removed the A from her chest but she chose to stay and serve her punishment.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I feel like Hester knows the punishment and fully accepts it and I think she just wanted to make the letter look different because in her mind the puritan way is just a little too plain, I also think maybe she wants the fat ugly man looking puritan woman jealous and mad that she isn't suffering
    so i diagree.

  44. I disagree with the statement because Hester knows what she did wrong and she knows her punishment. I also think if she really wanted to she could have moved to a different city and start all over again.

  45. The embroidery is some sense of Hester being a smartass to the community. She knows she did wrong deep down but she doesn't want to trade her pride in since she already gave in her "soul". Hester wears the symbol with pride to show that she is a strong and still capable women in the community.

  46. I think public execution would drastically minimize the number of crimes committed today. To know that for one crime you do, be it big or small, you will be killed for it would scare off any want-to-be bad guy instantly. From what i know of how they would execute people back then too, by rather hanging or cutting off of the head, I couldn't imagine anyone even thinking about committing a crime if they know that to be their punishment. Even for a person not frightened by the threat of execution, just from them to watch one public should be enoug hto send chills down their back not to ever want to cmmit a crime.

I believe that the decoration of her letter was not her rejected her crime, but accepting it and its fullness. She is able to own up to her crime and what she did by not being afriad to let eveyone know what she had done.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I disagree with this statement because Hester could of easily moved away to a different town and start a new life with Pearl. Yes she might not know where to go but she could ask around and find out if she wanted to.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think that hester is just trying to show that she knows her crime and she is proud that she is accepting it. she wants everyone to see what she did so i think that she made it so nice so everyone will see what she did

  49. I disagree, because Hester is a strong woman. I believe she accepts her punishment thoroughly and does not reject the community. Hester is skilled in sewing so she could possibly just be acting on creativity. Maybe she wants an elaborate letter just to please herself.

  50. I disagree, because Hester takes it like a man. She accepted her punishment and got on with her life. She also wants the letter to look good.
